Women and technology - this is why we need to promote women in STEM professions

Programming used to be something unattainable and untouchable for me. In my mind, developers and computer scientists were "superbrains" and "computer nerds" who wrote their first line of code as early as kindergarten. I deliberately did not use the opposite gender. Because those IT people in my mind were always male.


It wasn't until the Digital Shapers Program, "TechLabs" and my experience at the tech startup matched.io that I realized that even I, a young woman who has never typed the traditional first line of code, "print ("Hello World")", into any source code editor, could learn to program.


More women in the IT industry can achieve better results


With women making up 18% of the German IT workforce, we are still a long way from our goal and the progress made in other countries, such as Bulgaria (28%) and Romania (26%). Yet there are some positive aspects that can be achieved by having more women in STEM professions. For one thing, diverse teams contribute to a pleasant working atmosphere and ensure that better results are achieved through diverse ways of thinking and approaching things.
