Women in Tech: "Programming always seemed to me to be something unattainable and untouchable."

Updated: Aug 12, 2021

In their "Women in Tech" article series, entwickler.de present inspiring women who have successfully gained a foothold in the IT industry. Today in focus: Lisa Steinhauser, intern at matched.io.

The tech industry is dominated by men - so far, so bad. But slowly but surely, the so-called boys club is getting company from talented women: More and more women are gaining a foothold in the industry.

For this reason, we want to give exciting and inspiring women the opportunity to introduce themselves and tell how and why they chose the path to the tech industry. But topics such as gender bias, challenges or funding opportunities will also be addressed.

Support and Role Models

My father was a great role model for me. My mother was also committed to promoting my interests and motivated me to do what fulfills me and what I enjoy. Without this support, I certainly wouldn't be where I am today. For that, I am very grateful. Conversely, however, it is still a big problem that not all children and young people have the same opportunities because they do not receive such support from home.

Through proTechnicale, I have met some inspiring women in the STEM field. One example is Tereza Iofciu. She was Senior Data Scientist at mytaxi and FREE NOW and now works as Head Data Scientist Coach at "Neuefische". She told us about her career and gave us useful tips such as "Don't let other people tell you what you can't do", "Surround yourself with other motivating people" or "Opportunities open up new opportunities".

Manuela Sayin, co-founder of the HR tech startup matched.io, a job matching platform for developers where I am currently interning, is also a great role model for me. She coaches me, gives me meaningful tips in many areas, and from the beginning has tried to assign me tasks and projects based on my strengths, interests, and goals that challenge me, that I can grow with, and that I enjoy doing. Since I'm also very interested in entrepreneurship, it's great to get to know values now that I'd like to establish myself in my tech startup later on.
